Back at the Sonoran Preserve.  New route planned.

Happy Independence Day!

The plan today is to get a 7/8 miler in.  I think this is the last new hike we can get out of Sonoran Preserve.  The plan is to do the Great Owl Trail that goes around Union Peak.  It takes about 2 miles to get there and 5 miles to go around.  We are getting an early start because it is Monsoon Season so the humidity is UP! Our start time was 5:15 AM.  Last night there was a dust storm and some rain so the cholla are all over the trail.

I took a picture of the trail map from another one of my hikes so we could see the mileage.

We head up Hawks Nest to Desert Tortoise to Great Horned Owl.  Took the trail East so we avoided the sun on the back side.  The sky is cloud cover. It is hot with no air but tolerable because of the lack of sun and it is only 5 AM. Sleep is overrated.

At the juncture of UP. Which is Union Peak we decide yea...let's add the summit for .9 miles.  Then come back down head East to West. Back around to the start of the circumference and then retrace our steps.

I took a Panoramic picture before we hit the Summit.  Megan showed me how to take them last week in Sedona.  Pretty Cool! We can see all the Mountains we have hiked!

At the top of Union Peak we found a Geo Cache.  It is very visible which is strange because they are normally more hidden.  Tina is the Geo Cache expert.  She signs the log and we finish to the end of the Peak.

We did a Selfie and sent it to Jim our Canadian to say Happy 4th. Since I am from one of the original 13 colonies!

We took Great Horned Owl to the West and continued to follow the circumference.  We saw a few bikers but not many people out on this early morning.

At the intersection back at where we started the Circumference we headed back the same direction.

In the end we did 10.73 miles.  It was much easier than last Saturdays 10 miler.  Less hills however there were a few ups and our plan on weekends has been to get a distance hike.  This was perfect.  Is it September yet? I think we are ready for the Canyon!
