History on Papago Park:
Ancient Hohokam Indians graced this area thousands of years ago and gifted us with evidence of their existence. Modern day history began in 1879 when the Pagago Park area was designated as an Indian Reservation fo the Maricopa and Pima Indian Tribes. In 1914 the area was federally declared as "Papago Saguaro National Monument" until the name was abolished in 1932.
During World War II, the area housed German prisoners of war from 1943 to 1946. After thewar, the prisoner camp was converted to a Veterans Administration Hospital from 1947 to 1951. It became the District Headquarters for Arizona's largest Army Reserve Unit from 1953 to 1966. In fact, today an "off-limits" portion of Papago Park is used for Arizona National Guard training.

Tina and I decided to hike this area after work.  We know that it is not strenuous but we have not done it and when we hike Piestawa Peak we see it. So time to check it off the list.  It was VERY windy this day.  The air quality is horrible too and we could both feel it on this short hike.

The rocks in this area are very unique.  The East side of the park is where the zoo is located and the hole in the rock is often climbed by rock climbers.  This park is heavily used by bikers more than hikers.  You can pick up different trails. The elevation Is flat unless you boulder up into the rocks.

We tried to stayed on #5 which is Double Butte Loop.  There were a few trail options where we could go off the #5.

We headed towards McDowell Road to the Amphitheatre area.  This is where there are steps and a couple trails that take you up towards the rocks.  We followed a couple bike trails to eventually make it back to the parking lot.
The view back at Camelback Mountain was very nice. We normally are looking at this area.

There were a couple roads in this area. It is heavily used by bikers.

This was a short hike.  2.73 miles.  It took us about 45 minutes.  Not a spot we will return to unless we are going to go to the Zoo to see the animals. Boring!!

Hike #35 - Check it Off!  Only 15 left to go.
Heat is setting in soon so the hikes will be limited or done up North.
