Back to the Canyon Vista Campground for a new hike.  Same Parking lot as our Sandy Canyon hike earlier this year.  This time we are heading to Marshall Lake which is a 4.6 one way off of the Sandy Canyon trail.

It is very hot in Phoenix right now with Monsoon activity and humidity.  Tina and I decided to head North to cooler temperatures and get in at least a 9 mile hike.

Originally we were going to Red Mountain/Coconino National or Bismarck Lake but we decided to go less into Flagstaff.

We left Phoenix at 6AM and hit the trailhead at 7:30.  The temperature was amazing. Although it did not feel as cool as it says.

We will be hiking another part of the Arizona Trail.  Now that I am aware of it I have checked out many of the trails.  The trail heads East out of Flagstaff so maybe I can find some more opportunities to be on parts of it.  Below is a little more detail on what is on the sign.

We followed the same path as hike #40 to the bottom of Sandy Canyon.  The views were beautiful.  There was smoke in the air from the controlled burns.  Although on the way up on I17 from Sedona to before Lake Mary there was a lot of smoke and Hot Shot Fire trucks drove by the entrance to the Trailhead.

At about 1 mile in we see the sign for Marshall Lake.  We stopped and talked to three other hikers. They said it was a short steep hill up and then pretty flat to Marshall Lake.  That short comment was a lie!!  It was about 1 mile of up.

We hit the trail and up we went.
The walls at the bottom of the canyon are Awesome to see.  The colors are very pretty.

The path was like a pasture but it quickly turned to woods and a rocky path.  Our favorite type of trail where you twist your ankle and are off balance.  It's all about the Core workout.

As we turn around we can see the view of Mount Humpreys.  Pretty to think we were at the top of that on hike # 41 back in June.  (well almost at the top)

The trail is covered with burnt trees and stumps.  There was a fire in 2013 at Fisher point that was set by a person. Not sure if it is from a controlled burn or the fire.  The altitude definetly can be felt on this hike.  We are at 7000 ft and it does make a different as you head up the hill

Again we see the markers on the tree for the Arizona Trail.  We passed a couple dirt roads that are probably used by the Lumber Jacks.  :)

It flattens out quickly.  We are walking through the forest.  We talked about poison ivy, horny toads and what to do if a Bear were to approach us.  We need to research that.

We saw a little Horny Toad on the path.
Jim and I saw them last time in this area.  I think these are cute.  I don't jump when they cross my path.
Cool Tree
We decided that we would hike to 6 miles on my GPS and then turn around at that point.  A 12 mile hike will be perfect.  We should hike Marshall Lake based on the miles of the signs.

Marshall lake is dry but I read that in spots it is Marshy.  We did not continue to the end to find a sign because we decided to turn at 6 miles.  From all the pictures I have seen this is part of the Lake.

We took a quick break for a snack and some electrolytes.  We touched our toes and stretched. Yea Right.  We talked about hiking the grand canyon and making sure we eat and hydrate properly.

Tina showed her strength by parting the trail for me.

Lava Rock in the base of the Canyon

We hit the juncture of Sandy Canyon.  We passed two families at that point.  Other than that we saw one biker and two horses on the Marshall Lake trail.  It was very nice not seeing anyone.  My phone was dying and we were determined to keep the stats on MapMyHike.  We did it.  The phone died as we saw the parking lot and at 12 miles I saved it.

It was a great hike.  Harder than expected.  Which is why you must sign a waiver before you hike with me.  Great workout.  Bring on the Canyon!

We stopped for a cold drink before hitting the highway.  Looking forward to the temperature back in Phoenix upon our return. We wanted to be back in Phoenix so we could do to Dip at night.  It's all about the Dip!

Hike #46 - Road to Hana Maui HI

Hike #46

Date: July 15, 2014
Location: Road to Hana, Maui Hawaii
Hikers: Me, Sue, Bob, Lauren, Julio, Ricky & Megan

Directions:
Northern Maui on the Road to Hana. Start at Paia and drive to Hana.  Go Past Hana til you reach Kipahulu - Halekala National Park.  You can return the same way you came or take a partially unpaved road back that is ok with Jeeps.  We chose to return the same way we came because it was after 3:00 pm, raining and in a regular rental car. Water/Restrooms

Map from the Marriott Hotel

Ho'olawa Valley -http://roadtohana.com/twin-falls.php

There are many places to hike on the Road to Hana.  I was not specifically looking for a hike but knew that during the day we would be hiking.  The first stop on the Road to Hana is at Mile Marker #2.  It is called Twin Falls & CaveMan Falls.  We stopped here to see the falls.  The hike to CaveMan Falls is 1.5 miles round trip.

Its was spitting rain as we started walking.  The first falls are close to the entrance.  The CaveMan Falls were an easy .75 mile walk.  The road was dirt and as a result was very muddy.
The path involved crossing a small dam.  Once we could see the Falls we saw that you can not get to the Falls unless you walk thigh deep across water.  This is the start of our day and we chose not to get wet.  The two falls were still pretty to look at.

We stayed for a few quick pictures and then headed back over the dam to the parking lot.  By this time it was raining harder and the path was all mud!  My GPS tracker did not save because we were in the middle of no where.  The trail was 1.80 miles and took us 50 minutes with photo ops.

Lauren doing her Warning Sign Demonstration

Our plans for the day shifted quite a bit.  We had planned 10 stops on the Road to Hana.  We were pretty much washed out by most.

Chings Pond Bridge - Kid jumped from the bridge right before we got there..CRAZY!!
Our next stop was Black Sand Beach - Wai'anapanapa State Park
http://www.hawaiistateparks.org/parks/maui/waianapanapa.cfm

This was the coolest place.  The beach sand is entirely black.

We stopped at another waterfall on the Road but due to the rain kept driving.  By the time we made it to the final stop it was POURING.

Kipahulu - Halekala National Park - 'O'heo Gulch (Seven Sacred Pools)
http://www.nps.gov/hale/planyourvisit/kipahulu.htm

Everyone told us that this spot was beautiful.  You can go down to the Pools or hike up to the waterfall.  Well.....the pools were closed due to high wind and rain. There was no way we were walking to the waterfalls in the pouring rain.  I actually only took these two pictures.

We stopped in Paia at the Flat Bread Company for Pizza.
The Co. started in Amesbury Massachusetts.

The Road to Hana is an Adventure.  We left Kaanapalli Beach at 7:30 am and made it back to our hotel at 7:30 at night.  That included all of our stops and dinner at Paia.

I am counting this as Hike #46.  The Highlights = 617 curves, 56 Bridges, 52 Miles
More than 3 hours!
One and Done on this one.  Never to come back again!

Hike #45 Mahaulepu Beach Trail Poipu - Kauai HI

Hike #45

Date: July 12, 2014
Location: Poipu Beach Kauai Hawaii
Hikers: Me, Sue & Lauren

Directions:
Poipu on the South End of Kauai.  Parking lot on side of Grand Hyatt at Shipwreck Beach. Plenty of parking.  Water/Restrooms

Mahaulepu Beach Trail -http://www.kauai.com/mahaulepu-beach-trail

Aloha!  While staying in Kauai I walked the beach path every morning.  This morning we decided to find a beach hike.  This was a great hike. We drove to the parking lot that was next to the Grand Hyatt.  There were several surfers and swimmers at the Parking lot.

This hike is part of the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail.  Much of this area is not developed but this area has a designated trail.

This trail starts by heading up the hill to the rock called Shipwreck.  You walk on the sand then hit a hill to the top of the cliff.  The views are beautiful of the coast.

ShipWreck Cliff
Jump!

We immediately turned left and headed towards the Poipu Golf Club while hugging the coast the entire way.  The terrain starts out very sandy with ups and downs.  There are times that you can hug the coast but then need to move inland to stay on the trail.

We saw several people fishing off the cliffs
and there was even a small blow hole.

The middle of the trail is different terrain and we eventually hit the golf course.  We carefully stayed on the side of the course while watching for golf balls.  Just because we are in Hawaii does not mean people golf better.  We then returned back to a trail that was right on the cliff of the ocean.  Awesome!!

Heading towards Golf Course
We hit an Area that stated it was Sacred Land.  We felt like we were in the jungle as we passed this area.  We left only foot prints and respected the area as we do all areas.

Lava Rock

There are posted signs with warning since we are on the cliff of the ocean.  Of course we were serious about the signage. :)  Right Lauren?

Hazardous Cliff

We travelled to the North East. The Sun was hot and we could feel the heat.  It was nice though because we were on the coast.

We were told that we would hit a horse ranch and a bird santuary and eventually the beach.

We did!  We stopped right before the final beach area and took some pictures.

This was funny. There was a guy sitting in a upholstered chair selling coconuts.  We didn't buy them.  Starbucks Ice Tea sounded much better than cocunut juice.

The View of the Mountain was beautiful

View of the Ocean

Look closely. They are not Roosters!
Sue took some cool pictures of me and Lauren.  We look like we are GLOWING.  We are from our tans and sweat.

Three ladies from NY came up on us and offered to take our picture. We did the same from them.  What a great hike.

Smile and Say STARBUCKS!

It was a great hike.  We turned around and headed back in the same direction.  A couple places are confusing because there are a few paths.  We found everything.  Took a few photo ops and headed back to the car.  This hike was 4.33 miles and took us a little under 2 hours.  Lots of photo stops on this one.

How tough is it hiking in Kauia?  Seriously? WOW.  This is not Na Pali Coast but it is very picturesque.  After doing a helicopter tour to see the Na Pali Coast and the trail from the air,  I realize that it is not the hike for me.  No thanks.  I don't camp and it is difficult to do the 11 mile out and back in a day.  But check it out if you are interested in an adventure of your lifetime.
